John James' successful business career developed from his interest in STEM subjects, and he was passionate about helping children to achieve their ambitions. The Foundation has supported the science centre since its inception and to date, has now given over £1 million to the educational charity.

This year, the Foundation has made an award of £149,000 to support a brand new STEM Explorers Schools Programme which aims to address educational inequality in Bristol. Over the next 3 years, our funding will mean that 6,600 children from primary schools where more than 40% of children are eligible for Free School Meals will be given the opportunity to engage with over 200 exhibits and enjoy a thrilling science show & Planetarium experience. The schools will be supported at every stage including transportation, operational support and resources. The focus is on Year 3 pupils, who have just transitioned from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2, and where interest in STEM subjects can be shaped. Schools engaging with the pilot have reported that the visits have inspired a greater pupil interest in science. "Lots of children were commenting on the fact they want to do science when they grow up! Many said they want to to to space" (Teacher). The full programme formally launches in September 2025 when even more of the City's children can become curious about science.
