Bristol & Weston Hospital Charity

Bristol & Weston Hospitals Charity is the official charity for University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust. Their mission is to improve patient experiences and outcomes by funding projects that go beyond what the NHS can provide.

John James Bristol Foundation has contributed £24,000 towards the costs of refurbishing Elderly Care Ward 605. The grant will help to make the ward safer and more stimulating for those living with dementia or cognitive impairments. The grant will go towards door graphics, specialist clocks, televisions and visual interpretation signage to create an environment of normality. The evidence-based design improvements create adapted spaces where patients feel safe and supported with clear visual cues, calming colours and artwork to make the areas feel familiar.

The impact will be transformative for older patients at Bristol Royal Infirmary. Dementia-friendly wards reduce harm, restore independence and improve overall wellbeing during hospital stays, and reduce falls, confusion and anxiety.

St Peter's Hospice

St Peter's Hospice is the only adult hospice in Bristol. They provide free hospice care for anyone in the City needing end of life support to die with dignity in the way that they choose. Their services are in high demand and they are committed to caring for even more people over the coming years.

John James made several contributions towards the building of the Hospice in Brentry and to date, the Foundation has given over £2 million towards capital and core costs. This year, our grant supports the annual costs of maintaining clinical equipment and providing clinical supervision for staff. This is vital for the smooth running of the service and ensuring the highest standard of care.

St Peter's Hospice is reliant on fundraising and retail charity shops for 80% of their income. In 2024/2025 they cared for 264 inpatients, and 1,721 people at home through the Community Nursing Service.
