Thank Yous
I have just returned from taking a large group of pupils to Salcombe to take part in a residential activity camp on board a boat, which was an incredible experience for all the children who participated in the week.During the week the children all learnt to sail as well as participating in a range of other activities. All our children left being able to sail a boat and all completed things that at the beginning of the week they would never imagine they would be able to do, thus raising the children's self esteem. All of them returned home with a little bit more confidence than they arrived with. The week away allowed all the children to succeed at something.
It is hard to put into words the effect that this opportunity has had on the pupils who participated in the residential course but it is enormous and will remain with them as they continue their education. However this opportunity would not have been possible without your funding.
On behalf of all the pupils and Greenfield School I would like to say a huge thankyou.

Dear Trustees
I would very much like to thank you for the opportunity you gave me to attend Redland High School through a John James Scholarship.I had always intended to thank Mr James in person. He died when I was just 15, but I wrote to the Bristol Evening Post at the time, telling them how sad I felt that I could never thank him for the wonderful gift he gave me. He inspired me and gave me hope that I too, could be somebody.
Attending Redland was such an extraordinary privilege; I was able to study Greek and Latin - subjects so rarely taught now that there are fewer than 500 candidates for GCSE and A level Greek, and I believe, fewer than 1,000 for Latin. Those languages have stood me in such good stead for my research and my academic career. I read English (with classics) at St Andrews after leaving Redland. I graduated from St Andrews with a first class honours degree in 2005, and then embarked on graduate work at Lincoln College, Oxford. I am currently reading for a Doctorate in Medieval Scottish Literature (involving Scots and Latin), and I have tried always to attain the highest standards in my work as a mark of respect and appreciation for the precious opportunities that education can provide.
This week, I was awarded a Frank Knox Visiting Fellowship to Harvard, which will allow me to acquire further languages, this time Middle Irish and Welsh, and Scots Gaelic. I will also be able to examine manuscripts that are essential to my research. Without Redland, and ultimately, without the John James Scholarship, none of this would have been possible. I have never, ever stopped being grateful for the opportunities which John James set in motion for me.

Following a grant from the Foundation to The Bristol Light Opera Club, the Foundation was able to send tickets to many elderly people in Bristol for BLOC's latest production "Oklahoma!" The feedback has been fantastic-
"Not only were the seats first class, but the show was even better and we cannot thank you enough."
"I really enjoy the Light Opera shows, they are really good."
"A lovely production, and enjoyed by all."
